2017/18 Week 1
Windham at BG 12/6/2017
The first pick for dual of the week was an interesting one. Salem visiting Pinkerton is compelling in Division 1. I chose Windham at BG for a number of reasons. My opinion is that the D2 race will be the tightest race team race of all 3 divisions this season. There is also an aspect of the potential for a changing of the guard. Windham will have its hands full this season on two fronts. BG is a young tough squad and Merrimack has a blend of youth and experience that could give the Jags trouble. Its not often that a season opener has potential Dual Meet Champion implications but I think that’s exactly what we have here. This dual has the potential to be a Dual Champ eliminator right out of the gate.
BG returns a number of starters from last year Including Junior Dan Franco who narrowly missed being a New England Qualifier last season. The Cardinal also return starters Anthony Sanchez, Matt Hauntsman, Hunter McLaughlin and Sam Colantuoni. They also have a number of incoming freshman that could crack the lineup in the lighter weights.
The Jaguars enter 2017/18 with a solid core of returners. With multiple New England Qualifers in the lineup including Senior Vincent Marino and Junior Riley Millette, along with Senior Nick Sawyer and Sophomore Payton Sills the Jaguars are strong in the lightweights.
This dual comes down to 2 things in my mind…bonus points and which team can win a couple bouts that they shouldn’t. Can BGs underclassman get a win in the first 4-5 weights against the strength of Windhams lineup? Can Windham score enough points in the middle and heavy weights in the meat of the BG lineup? For Windham to win they need bonus points early and an upset somewhere else (and to defend against BG bonus points). For the Cardinals, it comes down to winning one of those early bouts outright, or at a minimum not allowing bonus points. After that, the Cards need to win the matches they should late.
My call is 24-21 BG.
